Explosion at Augsburg central station injures two, disrupts rail traffic

Two people were injured and rail traffic was suspended at Augsburg central train station in Bavaria after an unknown object exploded in a building passageway early Wednesday morning.

The blast occurred at around 5 am near the central station in Augsburg, a city of approximately 260,000 residents located about 55 kilometers northwest of Munich. The explosion injured two individuals aged 17 and 18, who suffered blast trauma. Window panes were shattered and nearby businesses, including a bank, sustained minor damage.

Police launched a major operation at the scene, initially closing off the main station building and platform 1 at around 8 am. By 8:30 am, authorities expanded the closure to encompass all platforms and station entrances, bringing rail traffic to a complete halt. The station, which opened in 1846 and operates 12 platform tracks as a Deutsche Bahn category 2 facility, serves as a crucial regional transport hub.

Explosives experts investigate

Explosives specialists from the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office were deployed to examine the scene. The involvement of the State Criminal Police Office, which has original jurisdiction over investigations concerning explosives, is standard procedure for incidents of this nature. The agency, founded in 1946, employs approximately 2,000 personnel across offices in Munich, Nuremberg, Wegscheid and Königsbrunn.

Authorities have not yet identified what caused the explosion or released information about potential suspects. The investigation continues as police maintain an extensive cordon around the station area.

Broader security context

The incident occurs against a backdrop of heightened security concerns at German rail facilities. According to federal police statistics, more than 980 knife-related offences and around 2,200 sexual offences were recorded at train stations and on trains across Germany in 2025.

In response to security challenges, Deutsche Bahn announced plans in February 2026 to equip all public-facing employees with bodycams and hire 200 additional security personnel. These measures followed a fatal attack on a ticket inspector. The rail operator has also deployed around 11,000 video cameras across German train stations to enhance surveillance capabilities.

German rail infrastructure has faced previous security incidents. In October 2022, deliberate cuts to fiber-optic cables disrupted all railway traffic in Northern Germany for approximately three hours, highlighting vulnerabilities in the communication systems that underpin rail operations.

Passengers attempting to use Augsburg station are advised to seek alternative transportation arrangements until services resume.
